Not since the Clash has a band hopped from punk to pop with as much success as Green Day, whose recently released “21st Century Breakdown” (Reprise) is the trio’s second consecutive No. 1 album. Opening its current tour last week at the Key Arena here, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool celebrated their achievement by blending expertly played power pop with punk fury, ear-piercing pyrotechnics and pure showmanship. They were supported by three musicians—and a crowd that took audience participation to a new level.
