Posted on 7 August 2009 by Ryan Erickson It’s Friday! And what better way to get the weekend going than plugging another great Coast Guard site? As its been awhile since we’ve profiled another Coast Guard related website here on CGBlog I thought I’d share one I’ve been watching for a few months now… so I guess it’s not really “new.” The site, Coast Guard Adventure, is maintained by an active duty Coastie stationed up in Port Clarence, Alaska. Earlier today, NOAA announced that it has lowered its August Atlantic hurricane season outlook from May’s near-normal prediction, to a near- to below-normal Atlantic hurricane season, as the calming effects of El Niño continue to develop. For many people, texting serves as a useful tool. But for British student Caroline Tagg, a study of text-messaging earned her a PhD. That’s right, Dr. Tagg now has a doctorate of philosophy in texting—the first of its kind. To earn the degree, Tagg spent nearly four years studying a total of 11,000 text messages containing 190,000 words and sent by 235 people, all of which she compiled and analyzed in a database. The Telegraph reports: [Tagg] discovered that people text in the same way as if th... (more)

August 6, 2009 4:00 AM PDT by Elinor Mills If you're a criminal and you want to break into a network, a common attack method is to exploit a hole in software that exists on most computers, has its fair share of holes, and isn't automatically updated. In 2002, that would have been Windows. Today, it's likely to be Adobe Reader or Flash Player, whose share of vulnerabilities and exploits are on the rise while Microsoft's is falling. Not Your Father's Float Plan | MadMariner.com

Boating safety authorities agree: you should create a float plan, and you should leave copies with trusted friends or family members. "We're going cruising in the islands for a couple of weeks" does not constitute a float plan. The information must be comprehensive. These days, float plan management goes well beyond a paper itinerary and the occasional telephone call. Social networking websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, properly used, can augment a traditional float plan. They can providing folks... (more)

Lapping Lathe Ways

Lapping Lathe Ways    I had some ‘slop’ in my crossfeed slide which prevented me from simultaneously having a smooth cross slide which was also stable.  The back right corner tended to left up when cutting, which allowed the front right (e.g. where the cutting tool is) to dip; this caused chatter.   It was very frustrating to have to constantly adjust the gib screws to either lock the cross slide or reduce the gib friction to allow movement. I saw the Mike Taglieri Procedure o... (more)

Echomax RTE looks great, but what about USA?Aug 5, 2009 I first got excited about RTEs (Radar Target Enhancers) in 2002 when the Sea-Me came out; in fact, it inspired one of my favorite PMY columns (in which you'll also learn why I want a whomping big horn on Gizmo).  The Sea-Me went on to be quite a successful product, at least in the U.K., but now Echomax -- the Brits who already build a respected line of static radar reflectors -- has come out with its own Active-X RTE, and apparently it just plai... Garmin N2K AIS, & the 5.3 unfix Aug 4, 2009 This was nice.  It was Friday late morning -- after the fog burned off but before the torrential rains arrived (summer of '09 is making history!) -- and we were idling along in company with the school schooner Tabor Boy.  All of which was being colorfully portrayed on the Garmin 5212's Mariner 3D screen; zoom in and you'll see the Tabor Boy's Class A AIS signal represented as a 3D icon with heading and track lines. You'll also see Gizmo's own Class B AI... (more)

This business has blown up in Apple/AT&T’s face. The Federal Communications Commission, in fact, is now sniffing around, sending letters to Apple, AT&T and Google, clearly wondering if there’s some illegal collusion going on. A few days later, Google’s chief executive stepped down from Apple’s board; tension is rising. (more)

How Search Engines May Mine SEO Forums to Find Web Spam By Bill Slawski, on August 6th, 2009 Post your URL in an SEO forum, and get labeled as a Web Spammer? Maybe. There are some site owners and internet marketers who attempt to increase how well their web sites rank in search engines by buying links to their sites, or exchanging links with others.
