Technology Genomics Hits The Farm Matthew Herper, 01.18.10, 12:00 AM ET When he was growing up on a dairy farm in upstate New York, the only professionals Curtis Van Tassell ever saw were veterinarians. He loved the animals but not the day-to-day monotony. He chose to become a geneticist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Now Van Tassell, 45, is responsible for the biggest change in the past century in how dairy cows are evaluated and bred. He conceived a new genetic test--which by... (more)

Frigid seawater pumped in from the ocean’s depths will soon help cool more than half of the buildings in Honolulu’s downtown. Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning LLC, which is undertaking the $240 million project, expects its technology to cut the Hawaiian city’s air conditioning electricity usage by up to 75 percent while slashing carbon emissions and the use of ozone-depleting refrigerants. The project involves running a five-foot-wide pipeline hundreds of feet below the sea, which will then suck u... (more)

IDG News Service - For $34, a new cloud-based hacking service can crack a WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) network password in just 20 minutes, its creator says. Launched today, the WPA Cracker service bills itself as a useful tool for security auditors and penetration testers who want to know if they could break into certain types of WPA networks. It works because of a known vulnerability in Pre-shared Key (PSK) networks, which are used by some home and small-business users. (more)

2009 has been a turning point for the Internet of Things, when real world objects (such as lights, cars and packages) get connected to the Internet. This trend has added a significant amount of new data to the Web, so for that reason alone it is an important development. Having said that, many of the following top 10 list are not yet mainstream products. But we expect some of them to become well known over the coming years. Underlying the Internet of Things are technologies such as RFID (radio frequen... (more)

Intel has unveiled a prototype chip that packs 48 separate processing cores on to a chunk of silicon the size of a postage stamp. The Single-chip Cloud Computer (SCC), as it is known, contains 1.3 billion transistors, the tiny on-off switches that underpin chip technology. Each processing core could, in theory, run a separate operating system. Currently, top-end chips for desktop computers typically contain four separate processors. Intel and rival AMD will both launch new six-core devices... (more)

Written by Frederic Lardinois / December 3, 2009 8:54 AM Google just launched the Google Public DNS. Just like OpenDNS, Google Public DNS will allow users to bypass their ISPs Domain Name Servers (DNS). DNS servers are, in many respects, the backbone of the Internet. DNS allows you to type a domain name like www.senate.gov into a browser instead of a machine-readable IP number like http://156.33.195.33/. Google argues that it wants to give consumers an alternative to their ISPs' DNS services in order ... (more)

Manufacturers across many industries increasingly emphasize sustainability. When it comes to building machines, cost is no longer king. New designs must improve safety, minimize waste, and consume less energy. Design-for-sustainability takes a holistic approach analyzing operational efficiency, safety, functionality, productivity, material use, ease of operation, and maint... (more)

Microsoft is busy building a Security Infrastructure (or Portal) and is building the Connected Information Security Framework (CISF), a project by Mark Curphey, from the OWASP project. The goal for CISF is to combine all Security related information into a central location, with the focus on building blocks and customization. So CISF will become a Portal, with "Widgets" for presenting the various pieces of security information. Combine this with some analytics (BI), Workflow, tasks, risks assets, author... (more)
