The Coast Guard’s ‘Wants’ and ‘Needs’ in the Arctic Posted on 24 July 2009 by Ryan Erickson

It was like a double whammy of arctic fun rushing my way. First the Alaska Journal posted a piece on the efforts of Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski in her attempt to convince Congressional Democrats to provide funding for a new fleet of Coast Guard Icebreakers in the coming years. We’re also reminded that $30+ million has already been approved to “enhance” our polar rollers. I’m fairly certain many of those funds will be poured into the resurrection of the recently dry-docked POLAR STAR. And though the ‘Journal’ article alludes to the “Coast Guard in Alaska” receiving $8.9 billion, that’s a little hard to swallow as that just happens to be our entire FY10 budget. But I do imagine some of that cash will make its way to the creation of the Coast Guard’s new venture in the North Slope with a permanent presence there
