« Web Form Validation: Best Practices and TutorialsXML/JSON symmetric REST web services providers for Jersey Posted by igormoochnick on 07/27/2009 Many times I’ve been asked to provide a set of Web Services interfaces where both JSON and XML clients can communicate with the server. Primarily it’s done for a set of reasons:XML is very convenient to use for inter-service communication. JSON is great for AJAX (web) clients. It’s perfect for GWT too. The Important Design Principle of Symmetry/Asymmetry - Austin Avrashow

posted by adminadmin 1035 days, 7 hours, 9 minutes ago

Whenever you show a group of related items, it's important to show 1) that each item is different and 2) that items share some commonality that places them in the same conceptual group. These contradictory goals are most easily achieved by having the individual items be noticeably similar, but visually unique. Here are some buttons from a web page I designed.  The unifying features are: All have the same size and shape and border All use the same colors (black, white, and gray with a blue border) ... "Gestalt" is a technology that allows web developers to easily include ruby, python, and even Silverlight code directly within the html of their websites. No fancy tools are necessary (or available at the moment). It also work cross platform and cross browser. The end result is rich and powerful web applications which are exceedingly easy to develop and deploy. (more)

The Efficient Coder: WebSlice and “We are unable to display this view” error message

After spending way to much time trying to troubleshoot the error message in the title of the post, I broke out my favorite tool Fiddler and started looking at what was being sent on the wire.  I compared a very basic WebSlice being sent form an HTML WebPage that was working and one from an ASP.NET MVC page that wasn’t.  The basic HTML page was sending the mime type “text/html” and the failing ASP.NET MVC (and ASPX) pages were sending “application/xhtml+xml” when the WebSlice was being requested.  The r... July 21, 2009 The Inclusion Principle by Margit Link-Rodrigue Designers have always had a vital interest in affordance, a term Donald Norman made famous in The Design of Everyday Things and later brought to the user interface design community in Alan Cooper’s About Face. Affordance allows us to look at something and intuitively understand how to interact with it. For example, when we see a small button next to a door, we know we should push it... (more)

July 21, 2009 Unwebbable by Joe Clark It’s time we came to grips with the fact that not every “document” can be a “web page.” Some forms of writing just cannot be expressed in HTML—or they need to be bent and distorted to do so. But for once, XML might actually help. The creation myth of the web tells us that Tim Berners-Lee invented HTML as a means of publishing physics research papers. True? It doesn’t matter; it’s a founding legend of t... (more)

Lessons From Swiss Style Graphic Design | Inspiration | Smashing Magazine

Also known as International Style, the Swiss Style does not simply describe a style of graphic design made in Switzerland. It became famous through the art of very talented Swiss graphic designers, but it emerged in Russia, Germany and Netherlands in the 1920’s. This style in art, architecture and culture became an ‘international’ style after 1950’s and it was produced by artists all around the globe. Despite that, people still refer to it as the Swiss Style or the Swiss Legacy. This progressive, radi... (more)

It’s well known that Apple is one of the most creative and innovative companies in the world, so it’s no wonder that many software companies and web designers would choose to follow Apple’s style of branding. The Apple website is one of the best websites out there due to its ease of use, functionality and the beautiful environment that it creates. I looked at websites that use one or more design elements inspired by Apple.com. Some of these sites sell Mac software and apps, so it makes sense for them t... (more)

Cats and dogs. Cain and Abel. Designers and developers. These are just a few of the great historical face-offs. Designers and developers often seem to come from different planets and have completely different brains. Developers want a website to work right, designers want it to look right. A few weeks ago, we explored the main pet peeves that web designers have with web developers, and suggested some solutions for them. Today, we will discuss the other side of the coin: the five most common gripes th... (more)
