I was working on a site tonight after being away from it for over three months. I came across some CSS and it took me a while to remember what it was for. I gleaned this online somewhere ages ago, but kudos and credit to the author whoever they are! For some time I have been having problems using the ASP.NET TreeView control in Sitemaps; every time I would hover over one of the parent nodes it would jump up and down. Here's some sample markup and the CSS to fix it in Firefox:          ... (more)

Misunderstanding Markup: XHTML 2/HTML 5 Comic Strip | How-To | Smashing Magazine

Since the official announcement of W3C to stop working on the development of XHTML 2 in the end of 2009 and increase resources on HTML 5 instead, there has been a lot of confusion and various debates about the “proper”markup language for modern and future web-development. With XHTML 1.0, XHTML 2, HTML 4, HTML 5 and XHTML 5 we have so many languages that it’s really getting hard to keep track! Now that the development of XHTML 2 is discontinued, should we stick to XHTML 1.0 or move forward to HTML 5 or... (more)

Most bloggers and website designers understand how difficult it can be to attract visitors to a website. In fact, most websites have just moments to attract potential readers. Several factors contribute to how well a website attracts its readers. These factors include well-written headlines, interesting content and design quality. While all of these aspects are important, today we will focus on a very specific and sometimes overlooked element in a website’s design: the “Read more” or “Continue reading” l... (more)

Learn about the Canonical Link Element in 5 minutes February 15, 2009 in Google/SEO Last week Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft announced support for a new link element to clean up duplicate urls on sites. The syntax is pretty simple: An ugly url such as http://www.example.com/page.html?sid=asdf314159265 can specify in the HEAD part of the document the following: That tells search engines that the preferred location of this url (the “canonical” location, in search engine speak) is http://example.com/p... The Definitive Guide to Using Negative Margins | CSS | Smashing Magazine

Since the recommendation of CSS2 back in 1998, the use of tables has slowly faded into the background and into the history books. Because of this, CSS layouts have since then been synonymous with coding elegance. Out of all the CSS concepts designers have ever used, an award probably needs to be given to the use of Negative Margins as being the most least talked about method of positioning. It’s like an online taboo—everyone’s doing it, yet no one wants to talk about it. (more)

Choosing a domain name for a new client is a difficult task. Domain names are the crux of a website’s existence. A bad name can create a negative impact on branding and the ability to strengthen the domain value. A good domain name is essentially priceless (tacky but true) in name, branding, ease of understanding, and catchiness. (more)

The Important Design Principle of Symmetry/Asymmetry - Austin Avrashow

posted by adminadmin 373 days, 14 hours, 9 minutes ago
Wednesday, July 22, 2009 2:10:12 PM GMT
Whenever you show a group of related items, it's important to show 1) that each item is different and 2) that items share some commonality that places them in the same conceptual group. These contradictory goals are most easily achieved by having the individual items be noticeably similar, but visually unique. Here are some buttons from a web page I designed.  The unifying features are: All have the same size and shape and border All use the same colors (black, white, and gray with a blue border) ... "Gestalt" is a technology that allows web developers to easily include ruby, python, and even Silverlight code directly within the html of their websites. No fancy tools are necessary (or available at the moment). It also work cross platform and cross browser. The end result is rich and powerful web applications which are exceedingly easy to develop and deploy. (more)
