For many people, texting serves as a useful tool. But for British student Caroline Tagg, a study of text-messaging earned her a PhD. That’s right, Dr. Tagg now has a doctorate of philosophy in texting—the first of its kind. To earn the degree, Tagg spent nearly four years studying a total of 11,000 text messages containing 190,000 words and sent by 235 people, all of which she compiled and analyzed in a database. The Telegraph reports: [Tagg] discovered that people text in the same way as if th... (more)

Posted on 4 August 2009 by Ryan Erickson The battle between the use of social networking tools and the military is really starting to heat up. Last week, while I was on my little hiatus, Peter posted a Danger Room story on the Pentagon looking into an all out ban on the use of social media tools/sites such as Twitter and Facebook, among other. This would seem a 180 degrees from previous reports that DoD services, such as that of the Army, were looking to open up it’s networks to the famed social site... (more)

Military May Ban Twitter, Facebook as Security ‘Headaches’ | Danger Room | Wired.com

Saturday, August 01, 2009 9:17:53 PM GMT Friday, July 31, 2009 3:59:26 PM GMT
The U.S. military is strongly considering a near-total ban on Twitter, Facebook, and all other social networking sites throughout the Department of Defense, multiple sources within the armed forces tell Danger Room. It’s the latest twist in the Defense Department’s tangled relationship with so-called “Web 2.0″ sites. But while earlier social media blockades have been thrown up over bandwidth and secrecy concerns, this fresh ban stems from fears that Facebook and the like make it far too easy for hacke... (more)

All the hype in the world (why PR isn’t enough to build your business) by Robert Scoble on July 20, 2009 As I travel around the world I see all the hype Twitter is getting. It’s on CNN. It’s on Entertainment Tonight. Everyone in UK seemed to be all atwitter. In Virginia the local TV weatherperson was touting her Tweets. Ad Age today commented that the free publicity alone is worth about $48 million. I think they undercounted it. You couldn’t BUY this kind of hype with $50 million in your pocket. I... (more)

Personal Lives vs. Electronic Communication: The Battle ContinuesJuly 29th, 2009 (1:00pm) Charles Hamilton Managing the flood of electronic communication — phone, voicemail, email, SMS, IM, micro-blogging and status updates on sites like Facebook — is an increasingly difficult task. It’s being reported that Bill Gates recently left Facebook due to a surfeit of friend requests. There is some great data in here about how and why Social Media Brand Engagement is worth investing in. It backs up my theory that the true ROI of social media will not be in the number of "eyeballs" it reaches, or how cheaply it gets messages out, but rather it will be shown in the improvements in work processes and efficiencies and problem solving. Quid Pro No

Quid Pro No July 25, 2009 Consider this an open-ended kind of post. I have questions as much as I have ideas. It revolves around online etiquette and human interaction. I’d love your thoughts, if you’ve a moment. It revolves around quid pro quo, or “something for something.” The basic premise of quid pro quo is that people attempt fair/equal transactions. This makes perfect sense when the exchange is obvious: I’ll give you $1.00 for that soda pop. It’s a lot harder when i... (more)

How to Develop a Content Strategy for Your Professional BlogJuly 23rd, 2009 (4:00pm) Celine Roque Many web workers have their own blogs, which are usually shared with colleagues and clients. So, how do you develop one? Know your objectives. Your objectives will determine... (more)

Someone out there's trying to find information about you right now, whether it's a potential employer, date or a long lost friend. What happens when they Google you? A recent poll here on Lifehacker shows that for about half of you, information about someone else with the same name or a web site you don't control gets returned in search results for your name. Today we'll go over the ins and outs of setting up a nameplate web site that makes you Googleable with a web page whose content YOU control. (more)

With over 3.6 million fans, Starbucks has just passed Coca-Cola to become the the most popular brand on Facebook. How? A good combination of a well-done Facebook Page, fun promotions for fans, and effective Facebook home page Engagement Ads. In fact, Starbucks gained nearly 200,000 Facebook fans this week alone. As you can see below, Starbucks saw some significant spikes on July 18 and July 21, when the company was running its Free Pastry giveaway. Fans who printed out this invitation could redeem a f... Could policy end Coast Guard social media? | CGBlog.org

Imagine if you will that the Coast Guard, say in 2006-07, embraced the landscape of social media as it does today. If they, or we, were to do so we would have used sites like Amitize.com, TheHub.com, or perhaps Yahoo! 360. In doing so we would have run into a problem we’re bound to run into in the future- these three sites, though perhaps popular at a time, are now dead. Here in lies our problem. In the current climate of daily social interaction, via the web, you’ll find a plethora of Coast Guard dat... (more)
