Google Barcodes and Place Rank Transforming Local Search By Bill Slawski, on December 10th, 2009 A couple of days ago, the Official Google Blog announced a new way of learning more about locations that you come across, using mobile phones that are capable of taking pictures of, or scanning barcodes. The post, Explore a whole new way to window shop, with Google and your mobile phone, describes how Google is sending out window decals to “more than 100,000 local businesses in the U.S.” that people ... After the closing night of DevConnections this year I went out with some friends who lived in Las Vegas.  On the way to their house I received an email asking me if I wanted to compete in the Windows Mobile Train Race over the weekend.  Not really sure what this meant, I said sure, it sounded like a great opportunity.  Little did I know how great of an opportunity this was.  As I received more details I learned that Microsoft Windows Phone and AT&T were going to fly eight developers to Seattle to hop... With Microsoft's Marketplace storefront for Windows Mobile apps set to launch, the company readies a series of free "WinMoDevCamps." August 14, 2009 By David Needle Giant Microsoft doesn't often find itself having to play the feisty upstart. But that's the situation when it comes to its mobile application storefront. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is the big kahuna when it comes to online storefronts, having leveraged its iTunes music store expertise to develop the world's most successful mobile storefron... (more)

Is Google Voice a Threat to AT&T? - Pogue’s Posts Blog - NYTimes.com

This business has blown up in Apple/AT&T’s face. The Federal Communications Commission, in fact, is now sniffing around, sending letters to Apple, AT&T and Google, clearly wondering if there’s some illegal collusion going on. A few days later, Google’s chief executive stepped down from Apple’s board; tension is rising. (more)

Take Back the Beep 3: The Search for Justice As you’re probably aware, I’m trying to build public pressure on the cell carriers to let us turn off the insane, time-wasting, airtime-eating 15-second instructions that you hear whenever you leave a voicemail message (or check your own). As a reminder, here’s where to direct your complaints (Sprint already lets you omit them): Verizon: Post a complaint here. AT&T: Send e-mail to: customerissues@attnews.us. T-Mobile: Post a complaint here. ... (more)

Google today announced, on the Coast Guard’s Birthday no less, the availability of their Google Voice service specifically for military members. What- you don’t know what it is? Ok, well, I’ve been using gVoice now for more than two years from when it was known as GrandCentral. I love it! And now as it’s Google voice you have a lot more control over what your number is; in fact, my number is something like XXX-XCGBlog. Perhaps geeky, but hey… On the Google Blog they have a guest poster (blogger)- U.S... (more)

I have been without my MacBook Pro for nearly a fortnight, following the failure of its graphics card. Whilst I am assured by an Apple Authorised Service Point that it is on its way back to me, I have found it fascinating that for 75% of my usual computer-related tasks, I didn’t need a computer! A few years ago, without a computer, I would have been without access to instant messaging or the World Wide Web. Today, I can still access most social networking sites, the Web and still chat to my buddies wi... (more)

On Thursday, on this blog, in my e-mail column and on Twitter, I launched “Take Back the Beep,” a national campaign to restore your time and money from the country’s cellular carriers. I’m referring, of course, to the obnoxious, drawn-out, 15-second instructions that Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile tack on to your own voicemail greeting. You know: “To page this person, press 5. When you have finished recording, you may hang up. To leave a callback number, press 1,” etc. The response has been am... (more)

Robbie Bach: Windows Mobile had a 'challenging year' By Joe Wilcox | Published July 30, 2009, 2:55 PM Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices division, acknowledged that Windows Mobile had "a challenging year," with market share declining even as unit numbers increased. The company is ramping up for Windows Mobile 6.5's official release in October. Whoa, Bach asserted that the browsing experience on Windows Mobile 6.5 would be better than iPhone. Let’s push back, and hard. We want those time-wasting, money-leaking messages eliminated, or at least made optional. And here’s how we’re going to do it. We’re going to descend, en masse, on our carriers. Send them a complaint, politely but firmly. Together, we’ll send them a LOT of complaints. If enough of us make our unhappiness known, I’ll bet they’ll change. I’ve told each of the four major carriers that they’ll be hearing from us. They’ve told us where to send the messages: (more)

How to Bypass Stupid Voicemail Instructions - Pogue’s Posts Blog - NYTimes.com

How to Bypass Stupid Voicemail Instructions In my Times column last week, I wrote about those inane, utterly pointless, time-wasting “how-to-leave-a-message” instructions foisted upon us by Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile. I calculated that they earn the carriers over $850 million a year, just by eating up our airtime. Several of you asked how I arrived at that calculation. Here it is: I’m using, as an example, Verizon’s $60-a-month plan. You get 900 minutes for that, which comes out to 6.67 ... (more)

7 Gadgets That Prove the Cell Network Isn’t Just for Phones

After writing extensively about how cell phone providers want to boost their business by offering wireless access for emerging devices, such as electric meters or e-readers, I decided to check with the nation’s four largest carriers to see what they consider to be some of the most interesting devices that run on their networks. I was looking for products that don’t resemble traditional computers or cell phones that we commonly use for data today. A lot of these gizmos fall into the people-tracking catego... (more)

The Cellphone Industry Strikes Back - Pogue’s Posts Blog - NYTimes.com

My Times column last week took the U.S. cellphone industry to task for its ridiculously greedy practices (billing both parties for a call or a text message; doubling text-message rates in two years; earning $850 million a year by making us sit through 15-second instructions on how to leave a message; milking the handset subsidy system; and so on). And wow, did it strike a nerve. Not just with readers, who flooded my inbox with 700 messages (plus 200 more on the Times comments board) in 24 hours. But ... (more)

Microsoft Tag client software installed on the mobile device allows the owner to use the device’s camera to scan or take a picture of ("snap") a Tag barcode, then accesses the information associated with the Tag on the mobile device. Extreme Remoting: My Top 5 TipsJuly 23rd, 2009 (11:00am) Georgina Laidlaw When I started working remotely, I had the nice — if misguided — idea that I’d spend my days working away in the home office with a pot of tea at my elbow. But in the last couple of weeks I’ve done more work out of my office than in. In fact, I’m writing this post on a public bus, in the dark, at 8.40pm. I know I’m not the only one who has times like this. Of course, working quite literally on the road has some serious ... (more)
