Chain snubber line

Chain 'snubber' line This is the chain snubber line used on VALHALLA.   The snubber line is 3/4" nylon, 14 feet long.  It is led through a deck chock with chafe guard of reinforced plastic hose to a deck cleat. This arrangement keeps the load of the chain away from the bowsprit, a lever that accentuates the rocking motion in waves.  It provides some give under load and also keeps the strain away from the rigging (head stay, whisker stays, and bobstay). The chain is led to another sturdy de... (more)

YotEeePC    ....   formerly Cruiser's Computer          This project resulted from some recent hardware failures I've experience with my laptop computers and from questions from other cruisers regarding my recommendations for 'first time' electronic navigators.  I decided to look for something among the recent development of small machines. CONSIDERATIONS  Here were my considerations: 1.  Power.  Modern laptops on the mar... (more)

Autopilot

Autopilot Installation (December 2003)         Though the integrated Aires windvane and Tillerpilot (see article) has served well under most conditions, I wanted something a bit more robust and easier to operate and adjust. My choice was for the Raymarine suite of ST6001+ Control Unit, Rotary Drive and Type 150 Computer system. The ST6001+ installation was straightforward with bulkhead mounting where it can be read from the... (more)

Flog it and Forget it      Is this the marine industry credo? The following is from an email sent to Port Supply, Wholesale Marine Supplies, on 21 July 1999.  To date no reply has been received.  (Updates as of 12/21/99 are shown: TO:  PORT SUPPLY This deals with my experience using products I have obtained from Port Supply over the past few years and am now using in a l... Fleet Code Bulletins via email    A solution to finding the elusive tropical convergence zones A bit over ten years ago I cruised in the South Pacific among the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides). One of the characteristics of these places was the lack of navigational aids which placed heavy reliance on the best one you can use the eyeball. But another characteristic of places such as the Solomon Islands was the poor visibility of the water, ma... (more)

Image Logs     Log keeping is a necessary element of seamanship.  The official log is the history of passages, sometimes playing a vital role in disputes, and bears requirements for record keeping that are minimal but dont always give you that recall you are looking for years later.  So the log becomes annotated with comments, drawings, photographs whatever you desire.   But log keeping underway can become a chore, especially on a sho... NMEA and Multiplexers

published 1044 days, 8 hours, 14 minutes ago posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 1045 days, 6 hours, 15 minutes ago
Monday, July 13, 2009 1:02:28 PM GMT Sunday, July 12, 2009 3:01:11 PM GMT
NMEA and Multiplexers The NMEA standard, a communication standard defined by the NMEA organization, defines a communication protocol called NMEA-0183, that enables navigation instruments to exchange data with each other. A compass can, for example, send a bearing to a radar to enable a north-up display. And a GPS can send cross-track information to an autopilot in order to steer a programmed course.Talkers and Listeners Communication with the NMEA-0183 protocol involves at least one instrument that ... ShipModul Marine Electronics

Connecting NMEA equipment Interconnecting NMEA instruments can be a real hassle if one is not familiar with the different types of connections. The NMEA-0183 standard specifies the talker ports (outputs) and listener ports (inputs) to be differential. This means that the data is transported by means of voltage levels over two wires, separated from ground. Roughly, the voltage levels swing between 0 and 5 Volt, and both wires are in opposite phase. When one is at 5V, the other is 0V and vice versa. Suc... (more)

The MiniPlex-USB is an advanced NMEA multiplexer, combining data from up to four navigation instruments into two NMEA outputs and a USB port. It is the ideal solution for computers and laptops without a serial port. Also available as the MiniPlex–USB–AIS, featuring a high speed input for AIS receivers. Using the MiniPlex-USB multiplexer has some major advantages: •Data from multiple instruments is available as one single stream on one single cable. This reduces wiring cost. •Seamless integration i... (more)

Nomadness: The Zen of Geeky Boat Projects

I'm anchored north of Hope Island at the moment, the boat feeling much lighter off the dock, the rhythm of life distinctly more relaxed than the task-oriented staccato that has characterized the past eight months. There is much of the latter yet ahead, alas, but this break is a good reminder of why I'm putting myself through this. As expeditions go, this is a minor one. There was talk of popping over to the San Juans, but my diesel is suddenly putting out black smoke above 1800 RPM or so and I have ... (more)

Chief Journalist David Nagle of US Naval Sea Systems Command brings us Milestones in Ship Construction: “So the ship’s been christened, so now it goes out to sea, right? Or, is that the commissioning? Have they put the ship into the water yet? And, when do they break the champagne bottle?” Just as there are many milestones in the life of a Navy ship, there are a number of significant milestones and evolutions involved in bringing that ship to life. The following are some of the major... (more)

Garmin VHF 300 AIS, xHD Radar & moreJul 9, 2009 Garmin announced a slew of new products yesterday, the most innovative of which is probably the black box VHF 300 AIS.  I think that this is not only the first combination VHF radio and AIS receiver (aside from the mod Icom UK apparently came up with), but also the first AIS receiver with NMEA 2000 output.  While there are a couple of issues with N2K AIS target messages right now, I'm confidant they'll be fixed soon, and this will become the way to go... The objective of the Zero CO2 project is to sail around the Mediterranean using a clean carbon-free auxiliary motor (gasoline powered motors are commonly used in yachts for all port manoeuvres). The yacht will be presented for the first ti... (more)

Electronics Mobile Yacht Monitoring Ask your boat how it feelsyou may be surprised by what it has to say. Ben Ellison Published: Fri Jun 19 00:00:00 GMT-05:00 2009 While it may be overly anthropomorphic to suggest that selfaware yachts are happier yachts, it is their owners who often shed anxieties they didn't even know they had! I know skippers who were amazed by the level of relief they felt when a new off-boat monitoring system first e-mailed them to report that all was well at some far off d... (more)
