Garmin VHF 200, first impressions Aug 28, 2009 It took a while, but the premium Garmin VHF 200 is now a reality, and it's a corker. I installed a sample on Gizmo yesterday and spent a fair bit of the day listening to it and trying out DSC features.  As Bill Lentz noted in a recent comment, the 200 is a snap to hook up using NMEA 2000, instantly getting GPS off the backbone and delivering DSC call info to any device that knows what to do with it (unfortunately few so far). It also seems to have a sens... (more)

Panbo: The Marine Electronics Weblog: SRT, blowing the AIS doors off

SRT, blowing the AIS doors offAug 17, 2009 In 2005, when Software Radio Technology talked about a Class B AIS transponder retailing for $500, I expressed some skepticism.  But "good work takes time" (as I often say about my home-built home), Class B has almost reached that price point in 2009 (largely thanks to SRT), and -- holy cow, Batman -- wait til you hear what they've got in the pipeline.  For starters, how about a small, high performance Class A transponder that will cost "well below $2,000" a... Panbo: The Marine Electronics Weblog: 18" radome testing, part 2

18" radome testing, part 2Aug 12, 2009 Man, this radome testing is getting complicated.  I had kinda presumed that the Navico Broadband BR24 would be obviously superior to other 18" scanners.  But, as discussed recently, the Raymarine RD418D kinda torpedoed that presumption.  While I doubt that any radar can  target a moving dinghy and two sailboats on a float at 100 feet as cleanly as you see above, there is a lot more to radar than super near range.  The inflatable, incidentally, dissappeared when i... Cushing man charged with trap cutting By Kim Lincoln CUSHING (Aug 12): The Maine Marine Patrol nabbed a 31-year-old Cushing man for cutting lobster traps Aug. 11, after two patrol officers, who were performing undercover surveillance in Muscongus Bay, said they caught the man in the act. Heath Yeaton has been charged with two counts of molesting lobster traps and will also be charged with lobstering without a license, according to Marine Patrol Lt. Jonathan Cornish. The ... (more)

SevenStar Class B, & an AIS ruminationAug 10, 2009 I've been testing a SevenStar SeaTraceR Class B AIS transponder for couple of weeks now, mostly on Gizmo but also in the lab.  I could not detect any significant performance differences between it and other Class Bs, even when quickly swapping antenna connections and counting targets.  But it does have a nice over/under tilt mount that lends itself to numerous install positions, and it also has wires for a remote silent switch, like the ACR Nautic... Good Old Boat, Quick Attach, Sta-Lok, Norseman, swasless fittings

New Swageless Fitting Shows Promise In my article "Do-It-Yourself Rigging," (Good Old Boat, September 1999), I said that after having rerigged my boat I was not sure it had been cost-effective to do it myself. I reasoned that, between the cost of the tools I bought and the cost of the swageless fitting I ruined (by getting a wire pinched between the upper and lower terminal and stripping the threads), I was close to the cost of having the job done by a professional rigger. By Clarke Canfield Associated Press August 06, 2009 6:00 AM PORTLAND, Maine — Three lobster boats were sabotaged and two of them sunk in a midcoast harbor amid growing tensions among lobstermen two weeks after another lobster turf war escalated into a shooting on Matinicus Island, law enforcement officials said Wednesday. The third boat was discovered partially sunk before sunrise Wednesday when lobstermen arrived at Owls Head Harbor to get their boats ready for a day of pulling traps. The boats... (more)

Not Your Father's Float Plan | MadMariner.com

Boating safety authorities agree: you should create a float plan, and you should leave copies with trusted friends or family members. "We're going cruising in the islands for a couple of weeks" does not constitute a float plan. The information must be comprehensive. These days, float plan management goes well beyond a paper itinerary and the occasional telephone call. Social networking websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, properly used, can augment a traditional float plan. They can providing folks... (more)

Echomax RTE looks great, but what about USA?Aug 5, 2009 I first got excited about RTEs (Radar Target Enhancers) in 2002 when the Sea-Me came out; in fact, it inspired one of my favorite PMY columns (in which you'll also learn why I want a whomping big horn on Gizmo).  The Sea-Me went on to be quite a successful product, at least in the U.K., but now Echomax -- the Brits who already build a respected line of static radar reflectors -- has come out with its own Active-X RTE, and apparently it just plai... Garmin N2K AIS, & the 5.3 unfix Aug 4, 2009 This was nice.  It was Friday late morning -- after the fog burned off but before the torrential rains arrived (summer of '09 is making history!) -- and we were idling along in company with the school schooner Tabor Boy.  All of which was being colorfully portrayed on the Garmin 5212's Mariner 3D screen; zoom in and you'll see the Tabor Boy's Class A AIS signal represented as a 3D icon with heading and track lines. You'll also see Gizmo's own Class B AI... (more)

Maretron's N2KBuilder, better than sliced bread?Aug 2, 2009 Actually I like to slice bread myself these days, but, man-o-man, Maretron's latest gift to the world of NMEA 2000 is one brilliant invention.  N2KBuilder -- which is free, and downloadable right now -- would be handy if it just let you easily mock up a proposed network.  But it does much, much more than that.  As you drag and drop cables, connectors, and devices, the software keeps an eye on total cable lengths, amperage loads, and the resu... By William Redmond MAC UK Correspondent A container crane collapse during ship loading at Southampton Container Terminal on July 13 has raised serious issues about dock workers and ship crews’ safety in which the investigative authority, namely the Health & Safety Executive, HSE, does not emerge entirely unblemished. The incident, which left the crane driver, 33-year old Mr Jay Squibb, with life-threatening injuries closely copied a similar crane collapse 19 months ago involving the same cra... (more)

Cruising with an iPhone, Navionics Mobile 2.2Jul 30, 2009 How cool is this!  Most of the time we were hiking Long Island over the last two days I had Navionics Mobile 2.2 (East Coast) running on the iPhone and in track mode.  Thus I could use it to check our progress against the trail map (downloadable here).  I also took some iPhone photos of the mossy rich and rugged scenery from within Mobile, which then geo positions them on the chart.  That's all neat, but the true kicker is that I could easily e...
