Android Market Sales, Are Those Tears or is it Raining in Here? by Matt Hall There’s been a lot of speculation lately about the size of the Apple App Store, most recently based on some numbers from AdMob which are summarized over at GigaOM. They came to the conclusion that the app store is worth $200M monthly, whereas the Android market is worth a paltry $5M. As sad as that comparison may be, from our experience the total is probably much lower. (more)

Read your OBD-II with iPhone using REV by Jonathon Ramsey(RSS feed) on Sep 26th 2008 at 7:01PM Here's another iPhone application that demonstrates that soon there is nothing you won't be able to know if you have just one device. DevToaster has created an app called Rev that reads information straight from the OBD-II port on your car and displays it on your iPhone. When it's fully operational, Rev can display things like vehicle speed, RPM, fuel consumption, calculated engine load, and a host of othe... (more)

All responses are in to the Federal Communications Commission's query asking why Apple put Google Voice for its iPhone on ice. But chances are that the answers that the FCC has received from Apple and AT&T will only provoke more questions. Here's the good news, iPhone users. Never mind that New York Timesstory citing a Google spokesperson saying that Apple nixed the app around mid-July. "Contrary to press reports," Apple's letter insisted, the company hasn't re... (more)

TomTom has officially launched their turn-by-turn GPS navigation system for both U.S. and Canada in the App Store for $99.99. On Sunday, four regional versions of TomTom's app popped up in the New Zealand App Store via iTunes, giving some clue as to what the U.S. might expect for pricing. The higher price reflected here does not include the companion car mount kit. Map coverage includes the U.S. with all states, Hawaii and Alaska plus Canada (all provinces) and Puerto Rico. The app is compatible with iP... (more)

By Adam Pash, 8:30 AM on Mon Aug 10 2009, iPhone only: As irrelevant as online banking and ATMs makes the physical bank for a lot of your banking needs, most of us still need to head to our local bank whenever it's time to cash a check. The New York Times reports that a bank called USAA doesn't think that should be necessary, and is introducing a new feature to their iPhone application sometime this week that will allow customers to deposit checks by simply snapping a picture of both sides of the chec... July 29, 2009 iPhone development tools that work the way you do You don't need to master Cocoa and Objective C to create killer iPhone apps. Rhomobile, PhoneGap, Appcelerator, and Ansca tools leverage standard Web technologies and still tap native features When Apple opened up the iPhone to developers, O'Reilly books noticed a big jump in sales of its long-neglected titles on Cocoa and Objective C. These elegant dialects never caught on outside of Apple, but when the iPhone SDK appeared, the world ... (more)

Cruising with an iPhone, Navionics Mobile 2.2Jul 30, 2009 How cool is this!  Most of the time we were hiking Long Island over the last two days I had Navionics Mobile 2.2 (East Coast) running on the iPhone and in track mode.  Thus I could use it to check our progress against the trail map (downloadable here).  I also took some iPhone photos of the mossy rich and rugged scenery from within Mobile, which then geo positions them on the chart.  That's all neat, but the true kicker is that I could easily e... Recently there was a review of a Coast Guard iPhone game, so I decided to look around at some of the other USCG apps available on the iPhone. There wasn’t as much out there as I thought, but I did find a few that were directly related to the USCG and some that could just be handy and coastie-ish. (more)

Using APRS for GPS locating on iPhone Maps - Mac Forums

Using APRS for GPS locating on iPhone Maps While playing with the Navizon Virtual GPS on my iPhone I noticed an important and very cool feature of the Google maps application, it can use KML from a website to pinpoint a location. With KML the possibilities are endless, but for one, there's a great site at http://aprs.fi/ for converting APRS locations over-the-air (via Amateur Radio) into a KML URL. This site also has the best Google map interface for tracking I've seen, yet. (more)

iPhone and Ham Radio The iPhone has taken the “smart phone” market by storm with something like a 25% market share in a minute. Now, my rule on technology is that I’m into purchasing version 1.1 after the bugs have been worked out. (Example: I am on XP, not Vista, and would wait another year before moving there. Except Microsoft just announced Windows 7 or something…). In any case, after Apple released the iPhone 3G, I got into the act after watching the YL work with hers for about a month. I can t... (more)

Hardware Becomes Software 07.09.2009 by LukeW Though it's not a new trend, the rate at which hardware solutions become just software solutions is interesting to watch. As consumer device platforms (like the iPhone) integrate a rich enough set of capabilities to develop on, the transition from unique hardware for every consumer device to a set of screens that can run many software solutions accelerates. Here's just a few examples: (more)

Hackers scoffing at iPhone 3GS' hardware encryption

Hackers scoffing at iPhone 3GS' hardware encryption by Chris Ziegler, posted Jul 24th 2009 at 12:19AM There were other features taking higher billing in the iPhone 3GS' announcement than its hardware-level encryption -- hell, even the magnetic compass was getting more play -- but it's there, and Apple's actively marketing the bit-scrambling capability to enterprise clients. Problem is, hackers are apparently having a field day with it, rendering it useless in all but name. One iPhone dev (who teaches... (more)

Hacker Claims iPhone 3GS Encryption is Incredibly, Dangerously Easy to Crack - Jonathan zdziarski - Gizmodo

posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 230 days, 14 hours, 36 minutes ago
Friday, July 24, 2009 3:45:44 PM GMT
Noted iPhone security destroyer Jonathan Zdziarski has cracked the iPhone 3GS encryption security, which is to be expected, but the ease and speed with which he did it is worrisome. Zdziarski claims the iPhone 3GS is thus "useless" to businesses. The iPhone certainly isn't as ubiquitous for corporate use as BlackBerry or even Windows Mobile, but that's starting to change, and Zdziarski is very concerned that the iPhone 3GS's security puts sensitive data at unnecessary risk. He claims that with easily-... (more)

Developers Create Unofficial Find My iPhone API by Brady Forrest| @brady The iPhone is correctly credited with bringing location services to the consumer. It started at launch with Google Maps. It kicked into hyper-drive with the launch of the App Store (there are now over 2800 location-enabled apps - via Skyhook). However, there is still a step to go, the iPhone needs the ability to share your location in the background to a third-party server. This has been done for them by a couple ... (more)

The development of iPhone applications has recently become a hot topic in the design community; everybody tries to come up with some creative idea, port it into a stylish iPhone-alike application and sell it to thousands of users through the iPhone app store. However, many of these applications are poorly designed and therefore miss the chance of providing users with a truly useful product that users would find worth recommending to friends and colleagues. We want to take a closer look at the design o... (more)

Having a fancy touch screen device on your bike brings the feeling of owning one of those extravagant new luxury vehicles. Using the LocateMe app, I was able to transmit my location to people at home regarding where I was on the trail. The speaker phone was also very clear and useful to call others. Best of all, the touch screen proved to be a really nice interface that worked well even with gloves on. While I mostly used it to display GPS location data, in due time, other sensors can be attached... (more)
