Self-Healing Antennas - Forbes.com

published 89 days, 7 hours, 38 minutes ago posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 97 days, 9 hours, 47 minutes ago

Lazzi, chair of the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Utah, and Dickey, a chemical engineer at North Carolina State University, have created an antenna made of a metal alloy that is liquid at room temperature. They inject the alloy into thin tubes called microchannels designed into whatever they want to hold the antenna. "The wire itself is a liquid so its mechanical properties are defined by the encasing material, which could be lots of things--a rubber band, bath... (more)

Henry Ott ConsultantsElectromagnetic Compatibility Consulting and Training Grounding of Mixed Signal PCBs A question that I hear often is:  How do I prevent digital logic ground currents from contaminating my low level analog circuitry?  This is a good question without a simple answer.  Most A/D converter manufacturer's data books and application notes provide little if any useful information on the subject.  If they do provide information, it is usually only applicable to a simple system ... Garmin VHF 200, first impressions Aug 28, 2009 It took a while, but the premium Garmin VHF 200 is now a reality, and it's a corker. I installed a sample on Gizmo yesterday and spent a fair bit of the day listening to it and trying out DSC features.  As Bill Lentz noted in a recent comment, the 200 is a snap to hook up using NMEA 2000, instantly getting GPS off the backbone and delivering DSC call info to any device that knows what to do with it (unfortunately few so far). It also seems to have a sens... (more)

SRT, blowing the AIS doors offAug 17, 2009 In 2005, when Software Radio Technology talked about a Class B AIS transponder retailing for $500, I expressed some skepticism.  But "good work takes time" (as I often say about my home-built home), Class B has almost reached that price point in 2009 (largely thanks to SRT), and -- holy cow, Batman -- wait til you hear what they've got in the pipeline.  For starters, how about a small, high performance Class A transponder that will cost "well below $2,000" a... 18" radome testing, part 2Aug 12, 2009 Man, this radome testing is getting complicated.  I had kinda presumed that the Navico Broadband BR24 would be obviously superior to other 18" scanners.  But, as discussed recently, the Raymarine RD418D kinda torpedoed that presumption.  While I doubt that any radar can  target a moving dinghy and two sailboats on a float at 100 feet as cleanly as you see above, there is a lot more to radar than super near range.  The inflatable, incidentally, dissappeared when i... SevenStar Class B, & an AIS ruminationAug 10, 2009 I've been testing a SevenStar SeaTraceR Class B AIS transponder for couple of weeks now, mostly on Gizmo but also in the lab.  I could not detect any significant performance differences between it and other Class Bs, even when quickly swapping antenna connections and counting targets.  But it does have a nice over/under tilt mount that lends itself to numerous install positions, and it also has wires for a remote silent switch, like the ACR Nautic... Echomax RTE looks great, but what about USA?Aug 5, 2009 I first got excited about RTEs (Radar Target Enhancers) in 2002 when the Sea-Me came out; in fact, it inspired one of my favorite PMY columns (in which you'll also learn why I want a whomping big horn on Gizmo).  The Sea-Me went on to be quite a successful product, at least in the U.K., but now Echomax -- the Brits who already build a respected line of static radar reflectors -- has come out with its own Active-X RTE, and apparently it just plai... Garmin N2K AIS, & the 5.3 unfix Aug 4, 2009 This was nice.  It was Friday late morning -- after the fog burned off but before the torrential rains arrived (summer of '09 is making history!) -- and we were idling along in company with the school schooner Tabor Boy.  All of which was being colorfully portrayed on the Garmin 5212's Mariner 3D screen; zoom in and you'll see the Tabor Boy's Class A AIS signal represented as a 3D icon with heading and track lines. You'll also see Gizmo's own Class B AI... (more)

Maretron's N2KBuilder, better than sliced bread?Aug 2, 2009 Actually I like to slice bread myself these days, but, man-o-man, Maretron's latest gift to the world of NMEA 2000 is one brilliant invention.  N2KBuilder -- which is free, and downloadable right now -- would be handy if it just let you easily mock up a proposed network.  But it does much, much more than that.  As you drag and drop cables, connectors, and devices, the software keeps an eye on total cable lengths, amperage loads, and the resu... Thursday, July 30, 2009 1:36:38 PM GMT Wednesday, July 29, 2009 6:49:12 PM GMT
After writing extensively about how cell phone providers want to boost their business by offering wireless access for emerging devices, such as electric meters or e-readers, I decided to check with the nation’s four largest carriers to see what they consider to be some of the most interesting devices that run on their networks. I was looking for products that don’t resemble traditional computers or cell phones that we commonly use for data today. A lot of these gizmos fall into the people-tracking catego... (more)

18" radome testing, part 1 Jul 29, 2009 "The fog was so thick that..." is a popular line here on the coast of Maine, especially this summer.  Well, it was so foggy yesterday morning that we didn't actually see this can buoy until it was just a little over a boat length ahead, and, yes, as the photo suggests, it was so glassy gray calm that fog and Bay blended into blank oneness.  But the amazing thing, I thought, was that the new Raymarine Digital 18" radome I'm testing captured this can about 3/4's o... Kodak Zx1 HD – A Quick Look July 25, 2009 · My friend from Kodak, Jenny Cisney sent me a Kodak Zx1 HD Pocket Video Camera (amazon affiliate link) to check out, after I talked with her about them at Jeff Pulver’s 140 Character Conference in New York. I shot a quick video of my very first impressions for you. You might remember that last year (and most of this year), I’ve called the Flip Mino (amazon affiliate link) the best marketing tool of 2008. I still feel this is true, as ... (more)

Automate Your Home Using ioBridge and Twitter

posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 230 days, 6 hours, 28 minutes ago
Friday, July 24, 2009 3:58:10 PM GMT
Earlier this week we brought you the story of the house that twitters. In this post we explore another experimental system that uses Twitter to automate tasks. Matt Morey, by day an engineer for Texas Instruments, has developed a two-way, home automation application using Twitter and ioBridge. We all know about Twitter, the now massively popular 140 character messaging service. ioBridge will be new to many. It's a web platform for remote control and monitoring, which bills itself (no doubt with tongue in... (more)

Adventures in NMEA 2000 Wiring - Part IJul 22, 2009 Guest entry by Dan Corcoran --- Breeze Pleeze has received nearly half of her new NMEA 2000 backbone, actually two of them, and I thought I would describe the thinking behind my network design. Two backbones, yes that's right. The thought was to power a smaller network when my sailboat is on a mooring or at anchor. Most cockpit displays, most sensors (like the Airmar PB200), future autopilot, and so forth would be on a blue (blue water) network. ... (more)
