If you are starting a business as a freelancer, you have a choice of the legal type of business structure (entity) that you choose. There are advantages and disadvantages among becoming a Subchapter S Corporation, a C Corporation, a Limited Liability Corporation, a Sole Proprietor, or a Partnership. Since there are both legal and tax implications attached to each type, it is best to get your lawyer, financial advisor, and/or accountant involved in the decision making process. In New Hampshire, residents pledge to “live free or die.” Apparently, that even extends to online banking. An eagle-eyed New Hampshirite named Dave recently took out his magnifying glass and spotted a new fee in the small print at his bank’s Web site. Customers who want to send money from Citizens Bank to an account at other bank — say a brokerage account or a high-yielding Internet savings account like ING Direct — must now pay. (more)

All the hype in the world (why PR isn’t enough to build your business) by Robert Scoble on July 20, 2009 As I travel around the world I see all the hype Twitter is getting. It’s on CNN. It’s on Entertainment Tonight. Everyone in UK seemed to be all atwitter. In Virginia the local TV weatherperson was touting her Tweets. Ad Age today commented that the free publicity alone is worth about $48 million. I think they undercounted it. You couldn’t BUY this kind of hype with $50 million in your pocket. I... (more)

One interesting comment that I've been seeing a lot lately around various message boards and such where people talk about AI War is the comment that the game is a labor a love, and that I'm clearly not looking to get rich off of it. It's actually refreshing to see that sort of opinion, since I was all but accused of being pretty mercenary (and in one case "one step above a viagra ad") in the early days of trying to promote the game (a super, super, hard thing for a new indie developer with no track reco... Groupon – Clever Collective Buying Site July 28, 2009 · I think Groupon is clever in its simplicity and elegant in its design. Basically, a company puts up an offer that only triggers if enough people take the deal. In the screen grab I took, the deal is for people to attend a spa, and 25 people had to buy at the offered rate of $65 USD. 67 people (at the time of this writing) took the deal, which, if you think about it means that the spa books over $4300 in business for thi... Fight or Flight: When Instinct Influences Your Business July 25th, 2009 (6:00am) Amber Riviere It’s a strange thing, but in times like these, when prospective clients have fewer dollars to spend and when there’s more competition in the marketplace due to higher unemployment rates, instinctive responses have a tendency to take over our business decisions.
