Podcast & Screencast

posted by adminadmin 1017 days, 22 hours, 23 minutes ago
Saturday, August 08, 2009 10:48:14 PM GMT
I recently recorded a podcast and screencast with Ronan Geraghty of Microsoft featuring the SpeedPlay software we developed for Velocitek. You can see and hear the result of this here. Microsoft was interested in highlighting the software as an example of a successful consumer product that uses WPF and also because of its compatibility with Windows 7. We recorded the demo and screencast using the Windows 7 Beta and it was great to see the software, drivers and hardware all work without a problem. (more)

Quick License Manager

published 1014 days, 6 hours, 35 minutes ago posted by adminadmin 1017 days, 22 hours, 23 minutes ago
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 2:35:45 PM GMT Saturday, August 08, 2009 10:48:10 PM GMT
On our recent project we were asked at the last minute to implement a licensing system in the software. It was one of those typical last minute request that the customer thought would be as easy as setting RequireLicense=True. Unfortunately it’s not that simple, but we found a product Interactive Studio’s Quick License Manager that made it as easy as possible. It’s reasonably priced at $300 for the professional version, comes with a .NET class library and just works so I thought I’d give it a plug here. ... (more)

Binding to a static using XAML

posted by adminadmin 1017 days, 22 hours, 23 minutes ago
Saturday, August 08, 2009 10:48:06 PM GMT
It’s very useful to be able to bind to static variable, either one defined in your own classes or in the class libraries. But the XAML syntax is difficult to remember so here’s an example of binding to Int32.MaxValue: Binding =”{:sysInt32Mode> The System namespace is defined as follows: :=”clr-namespace:System;assembly=mscorlib” (more)

Summary of the 20min perf talk

posted by adminadmin 1017 days, 22 hours, 28 minutes ago
Saturday, August 08, 2009 10:42:49 PM GMT
The 20 minute talk is posted here. I spoke till the speaker timer started to flash at me (giant flashing clock), which resulted in having no time for a forum Q&A, but feel free to post your questions/comments down below. I'm always curious about what perf issues people are hitting.  Understanding perf issues gives me an idea of how people are stretching the platform beyond our key scenarios, and which APIs/codepaths we should improve in the next version. Tim Sneath wrote an excellent writeup of my 20... (more)

What is the Silverlight Font?

posted by adminadmin 1017 days, 22 hours, 28 minutes ago
Saturday, August 08, 2009 10:42:46 PM GMT
Saw this forum post, and thought it worthwhile to send out an FYI to the rest of the world: In Silverlight 1.0, we use Lucida as the default font. For Silverlight 2 apps, we created a world-friendly font, called the Portable UI font (PUI!), which uses the Verdana glyphs for the Western characters and a variety of other glyphs for other languages. Why? SL1 needed a web-friendly font. SL2 wanted to ship a font that looked great with our controls. The decision to use Lucida and Verdana depending on whether ... (more)

Cross domain policy files in self-hosted services

posted by adminadmin 1017 days, 22 hours, 35 minutes ago
Saturday, August 08, 2009 10:35:47 PM GMT
One interesting question from the WCF forums: how to enable the cross-domain calls to self-hosted services, if there isn't an "easy" place to put the clientaccesspolicy.xml (or crossdomain.xml) as there is on IIS? The post at http://blogs.msdn.com/carlosfigueira/archive/2008/03/07/enabling-cross-domain-calls-for-silverlight-apps-on-self-hosted-web-services.aspx explains how to use the web programming model capabilities of WCF (.NetFX 3.5) to do that.
