Science Fiction Book Review: Accelerando by Charles Stross I recently finished reading Accelerando by Charles Stross and I thought it was a great book… it does exactly what I want from a future-focused science fiction book… it takes plausible advances from today and takes them to their logical extremes.  Bing tells me that “accelerando” means “it indicates a gradual increase in tempo, or pace” which, in this context I think refers to the increasing in technical progress over the years the book covers.  ... The future of scholarship? Harvard goes digital with Scribd - Ars Technica

posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 411 days, 15 hours, 9 minutes ago

Today, with the announcement that Harvard University Press will publish 1,000 digitized books on Scribd, the academic world took one more step in its glacially slow march into the digital age. Over ten years ago, when I first started my graduate work in the humanities, there was already much talk of the looming crisis in academic publishing. Citizen! If you bought a copy of George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-four," (1984) for your Kindle it was deleted, it appears that the publisher changed its mind about digital versions and Amazon reached in and removed it off your reader, sorry for the inconvenience! So, what to do? Under Australian copyright laws, copyright in literary works of authors, who died before 1955, has expired. These works are now within the 'public domain' in Australia and this is why the University is able to reproduce such... (more)

This morning, hundreds of Amazon Kindle owners awoke to discover that books by a certain famous author had mysteriously disappeared from their e-book readers. These were books that they had bought and paid for—thought they owned. But no, apparently the publisher changed its mind about offering an electronic edition, and apparently Amazon, whose business lives and dies by publisher happiness, caved. It electronically deleted all books by this author from people’s Kindles and credited their accounts fo... (more)
