Have you been confused about the difference between a keyword and query in web analytics? In some cases, they are synonymous, representing the words people enter into their web searches via search engines or search forms, but not always. In the SEO world, a keyword has come to signify the words people will search for, leading SEO experts to instruct people to write with search terms and keywords. A query is the act of searching, using keywords in the process. In Woopra, and most web analytics, a qu... (more)

For finding affiliates, Majestic rocks and is another powerful use, beyond link analysis. It is also a powerful tool for affiliates themselves to discover which merchant programs might have certain characteristics. If there’s a cry for more detail on the latter, we’ll write that up, but first let us see how… as a merchant… you might be able to track down all the affiliates of your ... (more)

MySpace’s Inflection Point

published 378 days, 12 hours, 22 minutes ago posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 379 days, 7 hours, 39 minutes ago

As Facebook becomes the most popular social network worldwide, MySpace, once deemed as its main competitor, must now undergo a rigorous effort to reinvent itself and hit a more focused audience. That seemed to be the thought of News Corp chief executive Rupert Murdoch, who, during a meeting of technology and media executives this week in Sun Valley, Idaho, said he thinks MySpace needs to be refocused “as an entertainment portal.” It’s hard to imagine the media mogul is satisfied with his purchase of the... Google Analytics and Feedburner Reports plugin for WordPress : tan tan noodles - msg free since 2005

WordPress by default doesn’t come with any sort of web site reporting tools (and it really shouldn’t). So if you want to know how many people visited your site, which pages they viewed, or where they came from, you’ll need to either rely on your raw web logs or use an online tracking service provided by a third party. There are many different third party web tracking services out there, but the two free and popular third party solutions that I highly recommend are Google Analytics (for web traffic) and F... (more)

How to count your outbound click stats with onclick in Google Analytics This evening I’ve set up my side bar “Find me on” links to track outbound clicks using a javascript onclick event. I’ve set this up mainly out of a curiousity to find out how much of my traffic exits via my Wordpress sidebar, and of course an interest in how this type of outbound link tracking works! My post builds on a great article (and plugin) from Joost De Valk. His article, Checking your outbound cli... (more)

Google Analytics for WordPress This plugin easily adds your Google Analytics tracking code (the new ga.js one!) to all pages within your blog. That's it's main functionality, it adds a few "extra's" though: Tagging outgoing links Many people are using javascript solutions to tagg all their outgoing links with an onclick urchintracker. That has two huge disadvantages: 1.It's slower than serverside tagging of outgoing links 2.It's impossible to segment outgoing links This plugin adds the poss... (more)

The definition of Google Analytics goals has always been clear to me - a means to measure business objectives, reports and improve on them. As a London based Google Analytics consultant, I've had the privilege to work with many of the UK leading brands and seen some fantastic implementations of goals, together and quite surprisingly the lack of goals. Google Analytics has transformed itself over the years from a 'nice to have' analytics software to a 'must have' analytics software so providing you agree ... (more)

Google Analytics is undoubtedly the most widely used web analytics application. Emerged from and based upon the analytics-package developed by Urchin Software Corporation (which was bought by Google in April 2005), the tool has become publicly available for free under the new flagship of Google Analytics. In May 2007 the application was heavily edited, developed and released; the design was simplified and more advanced featured were added. Over years Google Analytics managed to gain on popularity because... (more)

Research film Nielsen has just released new metrics on the web’s largest and stickiest websites. The results? You guessed it: users are spending more time on Facebook than other popular sites from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and AOL. In June, time spent per person increased by over 25% to 4 hours and 39 minutes per person per month (that’s over 9 minutes per user per day, on average), according to Nielsen. Meanwhile, time spent increased on Google sites to 2 hours and 31 minutes per person per month,... (more)

Have you ever been in the Visitors section of your favorite Google Analytics profile and wondered what the heck “User-Defined” was? Well today it's time to find out. So, what is “User-Defined?" The user defined variable allows you to "label" a visitor if they complete a certain action on your site, such as making a purchase or visiting a key page. These labels are useful because they last across multiple visits to your site. These labels are often called Custom Segments (or Custom Segmentation)... (more)

KDPaine's PR Measurement Blog: YES WE CAN Measure Conversations

In his wonderful blog Global Neighbourhoods, Shel Israel has aruged that there is value to a conversation that can't be emasured. I disagree, of course. Because in 23 years in the business, I've never met a communications program I can't measure. The value of a good conversation isn't that it leads to greater market share, or a huge sale, but that it enhances relationships, which lowers the costs of doing business. When Robert Putnam did his research on the value of Social Capital, he was in fact mak... (more)
