Posted on 7 August 2009 by Ryan Erickson It’s Friday! And what better way to get the weekend going than plugging another great Coast Guard site? As its been awhile since we’ve profiled another Coast Guard related website here on CGBlog I thought I’d share one I’ve been watching for a few months now… so I guess it’s not really “new.” The site, Coast Guard Adventure, is maintained by an active duty Coastie stationed up in Port Clarence, Alaska. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard celebrates 219 years of service as America’s Guardians in charge of the safety and security of U.S. coasts, ports, inland waterways or any maritime region, both domestic and international, in which the interests of the United States might be at risk. Lois Bouton, or “The Coast Guard Lady,” has been called the Coast Guard’s most prolific letter writer; why? She loves the Coast Guard; for years she’s been writing letters to 300+ units to say thank you. One only needs to ask any CMC out in the fleet who she is- my guess is at least ninety percent of ‘em will. Well, it’s our turn to say thank you. Mrs. Lois Bouton is coming upon her 90th Birthday this next month and we’d like to join the quest (one only need to search Google for the quest) to repay her g... (more)

A pair of red-hulled icebreakers – one Canadian, one American – will batter their way north into uncharted, ice-infested waters next week, seeking to buttress claims to the vast undersea riches at the top of the world. “We're headed into the Beaufort Sea, as far north as the ice allows,” said Jacob Verhoef, the National Resources Canada scientist spearheading Ottawa's effort to map, and eventually claim, a vast swath of the Arctic. Here is a great video about the United States Coast Guard 14th District search and rescue controllers. There is also some great Amver information in the video. Controllers are often the unsung heroes of the Coast Guard. We see rescue swimmers, aircraft, and cutters saving lives every day. It's the search and rescue controller, however, that coordinates things. Enjoy this video of our United States Coast Guard unsung heroes. (more)

Like an annoying fly… | CGBlog.org

Well, I’m pretty certain that’s what the folks at Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman think about Michael DeKort and his suit against the big contractors. They’re the horse, and Mr. DeKort is the fly, and they’re swinging their tail wildly in order to swat him down. A reader here, going by the fine pseudonym jackmehoot (and people wonder why I encourage posting and commenting using real names) is on the side of LM and NG and has stated Mr. DeKort is on an obsessive vendetta and wants Mr. DeKort to “jus... Recently there was a review of a Coast Guard iPhone game, so I decided to look around at some of the other USCG apps available on the iPhone. There wasn’t as much out there as I thought, but I did find a few that were directly related to the USCG and some that could just be handy and coastie-ish. (more)

The Coast Guard’s ‘Wants’ and ‘Needs’ in the Arctic Posted on 24 July 2009 by Ryan Erickson It was like a double whammy of arctic fun rushing my way. First the Alaska Journal posted a piece on the efforts of Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski in her attempt to convince Congressional Democrats to provide funding for a new fleet of Coast Guard Icebreakers in the coming years. We’re also reminded that $30+ million has already been approved to “enhance” our polar rollers. I’m fairly certain many of those ... (more)
