All the hype in the world (why PR isn’t enough to build your business) by Robert Scoble on July 20, 2009 As I travel around the world I see all the hype Twitter is getting. It’s on CNN. Ad Age today commented that the free publicity alone is worth about $48 million. I think they undercounted it. You couldn’t BUY this kind of hype with $50 million in your pocket. I... (more)

Amazing huh? I think the main concept (excluding the self promo at the end) encapsulates how I view advertising and where it’s going. It’s not just about videos. It’s about content. What content? Your product and/or services. Instead of telling people about your product and/or services, you need to SHARE your product and/or services. This concept is a new concept, it’s one of participation advertising. Youtube is losing money but companies that use it, are making money. Why? Simply because they (Youtu... (more)

United Airlines Song Background (short version) In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didn’t deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would... To my surprise, I've found quite a few people who have missed what I think will become one of the classic case-studies in customer management and PR in the web age. It stretches back over a year and involves a talented Canadian folk musician, Dave Carroll, and the story of his trip with his band to perform in Nebraska. The band was forced to check in their guitars as luggage, and used strong hard-sided cases for the purpose. While in transit at Chicago flying on United Airlines, passengers saw United ... (more)

[KD Paine contemplating the measure of a conversation. Photo by Shel] Yesterday, I wrote about the difficulties of measuring a conversation, thus creating a measurement issue for PR people who use social media, a practice to which I think they have no choice in embracing. My pal KD Paine the measurement maven, has done a good job of refuting some of the issues I raised yesterday. Years ago she and I had a chasm of philosophical differences between us. Now, it's just a few silly feet of cyberspace. We b... (more)

July 7th, 2009Blog Posts Are the New Press ReleasesPosted by: Jonathan Rick The staple of public relations is the press release. It’s been around forever; follows generally agreed guidelines for format, content, and length; and still succeeds in its objective to publicize the item in question. It’s not that there’s no longer a need to announce big news formally. It’... (more)
