Cushing man charged with trap cutting By Kim Lincoln CUSHING (Aug 12): The Maine Marine Patrol nabbed a 31-year-old Cushing man for cutting lobster traps Aug. 11, after two patrol officers, who were performing undercover surveillance in Muscongus Bay, said they caught the man in the act. Forest service staff next week will work with the Kittery Land Trust, which will conduct surveys in hemlock stands in Kittery. The forest service has already conducted assessments of its own in Saco and York, and other surveys in other southern Maine towns are expected in the weeks ahead. (more)

A Maine rescue department volunteer struck by a monster truck at a mud race avoided serious injuries thanks to a cocoon of mud. Jason Cole, assistant rescue chief in the southern Maine town of Lebanon, says the driver lost control of her truck Sunday at the "Go Deep Mud" contest when the throttle became stuck. (more)

18" radome testing, part 1 Jul 29, 2009 "The fog was so thick that..." is a popular line here on the coast of Maine, especially this summer.  Well, it was so foggy yesterday morning that we didn't actually see this can buoy until it was just a little over a boat length ahead, and, yes, as the photo suggests, it was so glassy gray calm that fog and Bay blended into blank oneness.  But the amazing thing, I thought, was that the new Raymarine Digital 18" radome I'm testing captured this can about 3/4's o... Rockland has received a very special honor, it's been named a Coast Guard City. There are only 8 cities in the US that have attained that designation, and Rockland is the only one in New England. (more)

BOSTON (July 16): The Rockland-based schooner American Eagle went aground in Boothbay Harbor Thursday morning, prompting a response from the U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guard officials reported the grounding Thursday afternoon, saying that the vessel was carrying 24 people when it went hard aground on Townsend Gut Ledge in Boothbay Harbor around 10:30 a.m. The American Eagle is a 92-foot schooner owned and operated by Capt.
