How to count your outbound click stats with onclick in Google Analytics This evening I’ve set up my side bar “Find me on” links to track outbound clicks using a javascript onclick event. I’ve set this up mainly out of a curiousity to find out how much of my traffic exits via my Wordpress sidebar, and of course an interest in how this type of outbound link tracking works! My post builds on a great article (and plugin) from Joost De Valk. His article, Checking your outbound cli... (more)

Google Analytics for WordPress This plugin easily adds your Google Analytics tracking code (the new ga.js one!) to all pages within your blog. That's it's main functionality, it adds a few "extra's" though: Tagging outgoing links Many people are using javascript solutions to tagg all their outgoing links with an onclick urchintracker. That has two huge disadvantages: 1.It's slower than serverside tagging of outgoing links 2.It's impossible to segment outgoing links This plugin adds the poss... (more)

The definition of Google Analytics goals has always been clear to me - a means to measure business objectives, reports and improve on them. As a London based Google Analytics consultant, I've had the privilege to work with many of the UK leading brands and seen some fantastic implementations of goals, together and quite surprisingly the lack of goals. Google Analytics has transformed itself over the years from a 'nice to have' analytics software to a 'must have' analytics software so providing you agree ... (more)

Google Analytics is undoubtedly the most widely used web analytics application. Emerged from and based upon the analytics-package developed by Urchin Software Corporation (which was bought by Google in April 2005), the tool has become publicly available for free under the new flagship of Google Analytics. In May 2007 the application was heavily edited, developed and released; the design was simplified and more advanced featured were added. Over years Google Analytics managed to gain on popularity because... (more)

Sentiment- a general feeling, opinion, personal judgment, feeling, or sense about something. Google’s New Review Search Option and Sentiment Analysis By Bill Slawski, on June 12th, 2009 At Google’s recent Searchology presentation, one of the new features described as being used by Google was sentiment analysis. Research film Nielsen has just released new metrics on the web’s largest and stickiest websites. The results? You guessed it: users are spending more time on Facebook than other popular sites from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and AOL. In June, time spent per person increased by over 25% to 4 hours and 39 minutes per person per month (that’s over 9 minutes per user per day, on average), according to Nielsen. Meanwhile, time spent increased on Google sites to 2 hours and 31 minutes per person per month,... (more)

Last time, we discussed Google sitelinks and suggested some improvements to the system. Today, we'll explore some of the things Web site owners can do to affect changes to their selection of sitelinks, rather than stewing over how random sites are given sitelinks for terms like "auto insurance" and "fitness club." (I received an e-mail suggesting some sort of "deal" Google has with sites that receive sitelinks for non-branded terms like those I mentioned. There is, of course, no way to confirm this, ... (more)

Just about a year ago, I wrote a couple articles about Google sitelinks -- one dealing with how Google was doing with their sitelink choices and the other a more instructive piece about how to get or adjust Google sitelinks. Google has done a good job updating its sitelinks algorithm in the past year, although there are plenty of examples of "ugly" ones appearing for unwarranted sites, such as the search for "student bank accounts," which gives a slight advantage to the first site listed for broad ter... Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 11:00 AM Webmaster Level: All You may be familiar with sitelinks, the links that show up underneath the first search result and which lead to specific pages deeper within the site. Sitelinks enable users to jump directly to important parts of a site, which is often useful for large, complex websites. Sitelinks have the additional advantage of giving users an overview of a website's content by highlighting some of the popular parts of the site. For webmasters, sitelink... (more)

What are Google Sitelinks? In 2005 Google started experimenting with an enhanced listing in their natural search results that can increase a site's visibility and reputation, and provide more traffic. For a long time we didn't know what to call these deluxe listings, but now we do. On September 7, 2006, Google's sitemap guru, Vanessa Fox, wrote a blog entry titled Information about Sitelinks. She explained that Sitelinks are generated automatically, and that Sitelinks are designed to provide searcher... (more)

Google’s Listings of Internal Site Links for Top Search Results By Bill Slawski, on December 22nd, 2006 Sometimes when you see the top search result in Google, under it is a list of links to other pages on the same site. Ever wondered how and why that happens? Half a year ago I blogged about tracking Silverlight support in Google Analytics. I’ve had a lot of reactions on how to track Silverlight support. In my original article I made use of virtual page views to track Silverlight support. But there are different options available to track Silverlight support. Tracking through Virtual Page Views When you make use of Virtual Page Views to track Silverlight support you will get inconsistencies in your Page Views. You will get twice as much Page Views as the... (more)

Most great tech companies start out with one great idea, and for Google it was figuring out how to make money off the work of others. Google doesn't publish any books or magazines or newspapers. It doesn't employ writers. Yet Google probably makes more money off the printed word than anyone else on the planet. (It might make more than everyone else combined.) Three years ago, Google set out to bring that freeloading business model to the world of video, when it spent $1.65 billion to acquire YouTube, whi... (more)

Why Chrome OS Now? Because Microsoft Office In The Cloud Comes Monday.

published 1046 days, 2 hours, 20 minutes ago posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 1047 days, 1 hour, 10 minutes ago

The timing of Google’s announcement of Chrome OS was curious. I don’t mean the fact that Google moved up the post on it by a day when some details leaked out, I mean the fact that they were announcing it on some seemingly random date in July, well before anything is actually ready to show off. Now, we likely know why. On Monday, Microsoft is set to unveil its plans to counter the attack Google previously had launched on it with Google Docs. Yes, Microsoft Office is going to the cloud. This is something ... (more)
