Google Barcodes and Place Rank Transforming Local Search By Bill Slawski, on December 10th, 2009 A couple of days ago, the Official Google Blog announced a new way of learning more about locations that you come across, using mobile phones that are capable of taking pictures of, or scanning barcodes. Written by Frederic Lardinois / December 3, 2009 8:54 AM Google just launched the Google Public DNS. Just like OpenDNS, Google Public DNS will allow users to bypass their ISPs Domain Name Servers (DNS). DNS servers are, in many respects, the backbone of the Internet. DNS allows you to type a domain name like www.senate.gov into a browser instead of a machine-readable IP number like http://156.33.195.33/. Google argues that it wants to give consumers an alternative to their ISPs' DNS services in order ... (more)

Android Market Sales, Are Those Tears or is it Raining in Here? by Matt Hall There’s been a lot of speculation lately about the size of the Apple App Store, most recently based on some numbers from AdMob which are summarized over at GigaOM. They came to the conclusion that the app store is worth $200M monthly, whereas the Android market is worth a paltry $5M. As sad as that comparison may be, from our experience the total is probably much lower. (more)

All responses are in to the Federal Communications Commission's query asking why Apple put Google Voice for its iPhone on ice. But chances are that the answers that the FCC has received from Apple and AT&T will only provoke more questions. Here's the good news, iPhone users. Google Adds Tools to Web Developer Suite by Dana Oshiro / August 10, 2009 9:06 PM There's something very straight-forward about Google's branding. It doesn't complicate the experience with flowery user design or site mascots. It offers exactly the type of experience you'd expect to receive from a company that showcases its name in mostly primary colors. However, when Google announced today's additions to the "Google Services for Websites" suite, it took us a minute to remember what the company blog ... (more)

Google today announced, on the Coast Guard’s Birthday no less, the availability of their Google Voice service specifically for military members. What- you don’t know what it is? Ok, well, I’ve been using gVoice now for more than two years from when it was known as GrandCentral. I love it! And now as it’s Google voice you have a lot more control over what your number is; in fact, my number is something like XXX-XCGBlog. Earlier this month, we profiled Facebook apps for Android, Babbler and Bloo, created by third parties because Facebook has yet to create an app of its own. Now, Facebook is rumored to be launching an official app for Android phones. While the initial offering may be somewhat feature limited, it’s an important step nonetheless. The app is built around Facebook’s Stream API, with updates and a tally of new items in your News Feed. Users will have full stream access, but no inbox as of yet. The app should ... (more)

Learn about the Canonical Link Element in 5 minutes February 15, 2009 in Google/SEO Last week Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft announced support for a new link element to clean up duplicate urls on sites.
