Geo-Location Game “Urban Defender” using Arduino By using an Arduino, GPS, and an accelerometer, this group put together the “Urban Defender” – A hyper-local geolocation based game which allows users to “claim” various districts of a city by throwing the ball against a wall to claim the territory.  The ball tells you whether you’re in friendly or enemy territory through it’s built in speakers and LEDs. The concept video below does a great job of demonstrating the project. The map above is how the u... (more)

DIY Real Time GPS Receiver with Incredible Accuracy We’ve all heard of commercial GPS devices like the Garmin or Tom Tom and even handheld devices used for Geo-Caching.  But…Did you know you can build your own?  A Kinematic GPS Receiver is a specialized GPS device used by engineers, topographers and land surveyors. Why? Because it’s a super precise instrument which is accurate to within 1 cm. Traditional GPS receivers have a significant delay when they receive signals from a satellite.  This delay ... (more)

GPS Framework for .NET GPS.NET is a formerly commercial .NET component maintained by GeoFrameworks, LLC from 2004 to 2009. In 2009, Jon Person decided to release the full source code of GPS.NET to the public domain for the benefit of the open source development community. This version (3.0) is the latest release which had a short lifespan before being released here on CodePlex. GPS Diagnostics for .NET After running GeoFrameworks for four years, I learned a lot about the problems which users typically face when they're trying to get their GPS device to work. These problems add up to many hours of technical support, yet the list of problems is short: Users' Windows Mobile 5.0+ devices frequently have incorrect GPS Intermediate Driver settings. Users are unaware that Bluetooth is turned off, or do not know how to configure a virtual serial port for their GPS device. ..... (more)

GeoFrameworks and Jon Person released their GPS Framework for .NET on CodePlex!  The really nice thing about this framework is it works with both the full blown .NET Framework and the Compact Framework.  If you’re developing for a Windows Mobile, embedded, laptop or desktop computer, it should handle all your needs. Just a few of the features are: Automatic detection of serial GPS devices (or devices found via a virtual serial port). Automatic detection of Bluetooth devices (when using the Microsoft ... (more)

Having a fancy touch screen device on your bike brings the feeling of owning one of those extravagant new luxury vehicles. Using the LocateMe app, I was able to transmit my location to people at home regarding where I was on the trail. The speaker phone was also very clear and useful to call others. Best of all, the touch screen proved to be a really nice interface that worked well even with gloves on. While I mostly used it to display GPS location data, in due time, other sensors can be attached... (more)

When Apple announced the addition of a compass to the iPhone 3GS, shortsighted onlookers responded with a yawn. Yay, we can find magnetic north. But iPhone app developers quickly saw an opportunity, and a new breed of "augmented reality" apps are about to be born. Holding the phone in front of you, locations are plotted on a live view of the world in relation to where you're standing. The apps combine the phone's key features -- camera, GPS, compass and Internet connectivity -- to create a sort of head... (more)

But then I discovered the inexpensive, handy-dandy iPhone app simply called speed. The display is clear and legible, and it reads in both kilometers and miles per hour. You'll probably have to be moving at least 5 mph to get a reading, but you can rest assured that the GPS reading is definitely more accurate than the old-fashioned analog speedo you might have been using. The bonus is that you don't need a separate camera to "shoot" your speed reading; just hit the "menu button" and the "on/off" button... (more)

DGPS corrections over the Internet

Introduction On a stationary GPS without a differential correction signal, you should see a 20m average radius "random walk" pattern. On the same receiver with DGPS corrections and a good view of the sky, the error should be reduced to approximately 2m average radius. If you've always wanted to see how clean the GPS signal is once the government-induced noise signal is removed but didn't want to spend the money for a DGPS radio, here is your big chance! I'd like to announce a fun DGPS hack. I've wr... (more)
