August 12th, 2009 by Ben Parr Facebook’s (facebook) been evolving right before our very eyes. It started back in March, when Facebook rolled out a new homepage design and redesigned Facebook Pages. At the same time, they started announcing changes to open up the platform: public profiles, profile fans, public status updates, real-time search, and earlier this morning, Facebook Lite. Facebook’s been busy. . . (more)

Delicious Freshens Up With Twitter, Which Its Founder Hates

published 393 days, 4 hours, 38 minutes ago posted by JoshuaSJoshuaS 394 days, 22 hours, 24 minutes ago
Thursday, August 06, 2009 11:41:07 AM GMT Tuesday, August 04, 2009 5:54:15 PM GMT
Delicious was once one of the hottest social sites on the Internet. That’s why Yahoo bought it in 2005. But it’s weird now to even think about it as a social site, I get more of the utilitarian vibe from it these days. People still use it, but it’s more of a repository. Or, to put it another way, it’s where links go to die. Contrast that with services like Twitter, Facebook and FriendFeed where people are sharing and re-sharing links all over the place, and having conversations about the content, making... (more)

The global rise of Facebook is nothing less than astounding. In the month of June alone it gained 24 million unique visitors worldwide, compared to the month before, for a total of 340 million unique visitors worldwide.  It is now the fourth largest site in the world, trailing only Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo sites, according to comScore (see table below). Facebook itself only officially acknowledges 250 million active registered users (but you don’t have to be a registered user to visit some Facebook... (more)

published 394 days, 21 hours, 50 minutes ago posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 398 days, 22 hours, 14 minutes ago
Tuesday, August 04, 2009 6:28:32 PM GMT Friday, July 31, 2009 6:04:14 PM GMT
Reports from Inside Facebook earlier this year have shown the growth in Facebook use amongst users over 35 and baby boomers especially. Now, a new study from Anderson Analyticsshows how different generations are using social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and LinkedIn. According to the numbers, the top reasons for joining a social network across all generations are to “keep in touch with friends” and “for fun.” However, as expected, older users are primarily using the site to keep i... Research conducted by Facebook’s “in-house sociologist” Cameron Marlow last year and presented in May at the International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media offers some interesting findings on what makes the pages of celebrities, bands or movies grow to large numbers in a such a short time period. The findings aren’t just relevant to the next garage band that’s looking to make it big — there’s a lot to be learned by big brands, as well. Many brands are trying a little bit of everything these d... (more)

Military May Ban Twitter, Facebook as Security ‘Headaches’ | Danger Room | Wired.com

Saturday, August 01, 2009 9:17:53 PM GMT Friday, July 31, 2009 3:59:26 PM GMT
The U.S. military is strongly considering a near-total ban on Twitter, Facebook, and all other social networking sites throughout the Department of Defense, multiple sources within the armed forces tell Danger Room. It’s the latest twist in the Defense Department’s tangled relationship with so-called “Web 2.0″ sites. But while earlier social media blockades have been thrown up over bandwidth and secrecy concerns, this fresh ban stems from fears that Facebook and the like make it far too easy for hacke... (more)

Since Facebook launched its application Platform in 2007, over 350,000 applications have been developed on top of it. As the Platform has grown, so has all the code underlying it. As Facebook puts it, “What started out as a small collection of API methods … has evolved into a comprehensive set of tools and products that have enabled you to create hundreds of thousands of innovative, engaging experiences on Facebook and across the Web.” Anything as large as the Facebook Platform is bound to require mainte... APIs Critical to Facebook’s Plans to Dominate Real Time Search

published 400 days, 2 hours, 42 minutes ago posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 400 days, 23 hours, 55 minutes ago

As Facebook continues its major push toward greater user openness (a la Twitter) this year, two product priorities are leading the way. First, Facebook’s new privacy controls will make it easier for Facebook users to share content publicly with everyone. Second, Facebook’s new real time search engine is designed to make it easier to find content your friends - or any Facebook users - have shared. Of course, the two products are heavily intertwined. Without more open sharing, Facebook’s real time searc... (more)

Earlier this month, we profiled Facebook apps for Android, Babbler and Bloo, created by third parties because Facebook has yet to create an app of its own. Now, Facebook is rumored to be launching an official app for Android phones. While the initial offering may be somewhat feature limited, it’s an important step nonetheless. The app is built around Facebook’s Stream API, with updates and a tally of new items in your News Feed. Users will have full stream access, but no inbox as of yet. The app should ... (more)

Managing a Facebook Page can be a daunting task. Once you’ve set up a Page for your business or brand, how do you keep the content you share fresh, engaging, and social? For Facebook marketers, mastering the way you share content on your Page’s Wall - arguably the most important feature on Facebook, since updates flow directly to users’ home pages - is crucial. While Facebook’s in-house platform ad network is still in early stages of alpha testing, it may in fact be driving significant revenues from social game developers purchasing Facebook Ads to help boost the launch of their games. This slightly more indirect method of monetizing its platform may actually be a pretty substantial line of revenue for the company. For example, in an interview with Silicon Alley Insider, Zynga CEO Mark Pincus said the company regularly spends large sums when launching new ti... (more)

10 Powerful Ways to Target Facebook Ads Every Performance Advertiser Should Know

posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 402 days, 20 hours, 3 minutes ago
Monday, July 27, 2009 8:15:37 PM GMT
As most sophisticated marketers know by now, performance advertising on Facebook is significantly different from search engine marketing. While SEM is fundamentally keyword-targeted, meaning advertisers bid on keywords, Facebook Ads is fundamentally profile-targeted, meaning advertisers bid on people. As a result, the ad copy, call to action, and graphics need to be rethought and re-designed for the “people-targeted” Facebook world - not just copied and pasted from your Google AdWords campaign. As more ... (more)

Check Out Pending Connections on LinkedIn and FacebookJuly 27th, 2009 (6:00am) Charles Hamilton As Meryl wrote a few days ago, LinkedIn and Facebook are excellent business networking tools. Both sites offer useful ways of connecting with people you know, who you can ask to become part of your network. It’s easy to forget who you’ve requested to become a connection, especially since some requests might be pending for a long time. Luckily, Facebook has just added a way of seeing who you’ve invite... What Will Facebook Connect Mean for Online Advertising?

published 402 days, 1 hour, 11 minutes ago posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 402 days, 22 hours, 53 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 28, 2009 3:07:25 PM GMT Monday, July 27, 2009 5:26:02 PM GMT
As sites continue to utilize Facebook Connect to drive viral traffic and increase registration rates, many might wonder: How will Connect generate revenues for Facebook itself? For now, it doesn’t. However, Facebook remains committed to growing the platform to allow publishers to more easily connect with its 250 million+ users. Facebook has enabled thousands of sites to add Facebook Connect for free, and the content people share on those sites is streamed into the Facebook News Feed, where friends ca... (more)

Michael Jackson’s Facebook Page Becomes First to Reach 10 Million Fans

One month after Michael Jackson passed away, his Facebook Page has become the first (by a big margin) to reach 10 million fans. Fans from around the world are continuing to leave Wall posts in honor of the music legend and upload new photos to the Page. In addition, the most recent updates from the Page’s official administrator have received nearly 50,000 likes and several thousand comments each. However, while the Page’s administrator was updating the Page at least daily through July 17, there hasn’... (more)

Three Changes I Wish Facebook Would Make July 26, 2009 · I’m experimenting in Facebook, and I have come across a few things that I wish Facebook would do differently. I’m sharing these to get your perspective, but also because I don’t really know how to ask Facebook directly. I don’t have the relationship that Robert has with them. So, if I post it here, I’ll just hope the world sees it. And if not, it informs my thoughts for future on what I think a company might want from a soc... (more)

Facebook Issues Statement About Advertising Policies and User Photos

published 402 days, 23 hours, 31 minutes ago posted by http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/http://jonnyboats.wordpress.com/ 404 days, 19 hours, 39 minutes ago
Monday, July 27, 2009 4:48:08 PM GMT Saturday, July 25, 2009 8:39:23 PM GMT
Last month, Facebook suspended two Facebook Platform ad networks from operating on the Facebook Platform due to deceptive practices and bad user experience. The ad networks were allegedly presenting Facebook users with misleading advertisements inside third party applications (i.e. suggesting a user’s friends had taken an action when they hadn’t), and sometimes putting Facebook user data on outside landing pages in ways that violated Facebook’s privacy policy. Since then, those ad networks have not serv... (more)

When Facebook first rolled out custom usernames, we cautioned that much like a bad tattoo, you wouldn’t be able to undo them. That didn’t stop some people from registering ridiculous names or clearly trademarked terms that might be funny today but not good long-term choices. However, it now appears that Facebook has updated their policy, perhaps after being inundated with requests to change poor name choices, or maybe just because registrations have slowed to a more manageable pace and they intended t...
