PORTLAND, Maine — Three lobster boats were sabotaged and two of them sunk in a midcoast harbor amid growing tensions among lobstermen two weeks after another lobster turf war escalated into a shooting on Matinicus Island, law enforcement officials said Wednesday. The third boat was discovered partially sunk before sunrise Wednesday when lobstermen arrived at Owls Head Harbor to get their boats ready for a day of pulling traps.

The boats' rubber hoses were cut, allowing ocean water to fill the lower compartments, said Donald McMahan Sr., a retired Owls Head lobsterman whose brother and son own two of the boats.

But the sinkings aren't connected to the July 20 shooting on Matinicus that sent one lobsterman to jail and another to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck, McMahan said. Instead, he said, most fishermen think it's a local dispute of some sort.
