BOSTON (July 16): The Rockland-based schooner American Eagle went aground in Boothbay Harbor Thursday morning, prompting a response from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Coast Guard officials reported the grounding Thursday afternoon, saying that the vessel was carrying 24 people when it went hard aground on Townsend Gut Ledge in Boothbay Harbor around 10:30 a.m.

The American Eagle is a 92-foot schooner owned and operated by Capt. John Foss. It is not known if Foss was on board or at the helm when the grounding occurred.

In an updated press release, the Coast Guard said the schooner was able to re-float off the ledge at 2:07 p.m. on the incoming tide. American Eagle is now at anchor in Boothbay Harbor, where marine investigators and inspectors from Coast Guard Sector Northern New England in Portland are trying to determine if the schooner is safe to return to the dock, according to the press release. The Coast Guard said the schooner was not taking on water.
